We are seeking a senior lab manager with a background in the marine sciences, coastal engineering, or a related field and extensive experience in managing and maintaining marine laboratories including equipment and personnel. Experience in assisting and/or running field and laboratory experiments is also desirable. Experience in management of labs using trace metal techniques in geochemistry and/or biogeochemistry is preferred. This role will be located in the Northern Caribbean (exact location to be disclosed to competitive candidates) where the candidate will manage the Project Vesta field station with a team of lab technicians and project scientists. We are seeking a candidate who also has experience in assisting in field research in remote areas where resources may be limited. While this position is located in the Dominican Republic, this candidate will have the potential opportunity to grow with the company into new sites located worldwide. This site is our first project site where we are developing numerous fundamental protocols that can be broadly adapted elsewhere.
Conditions can vary on site from intermittent power outages to limited technical support to strong storms. The candidate must expect variability in circumstances and be resourceful in solving unexpected challenges as they surface.
Various aspects will involve lab management, operations, and upkeep including but not limited to running, maintaining, and troubleshooting analytical lab equipment, designing standardized lab protocols, inventorying and ordering supplies, assisting in field and laboratory studies, and managing lab personnel. This position will work closely with the senior and project scientist to ensure timely execution of various experiments. This individual must thrive in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment while simultaneously contributing to multiple projects. Fluency in Spanish is a strong plus.

Project Vesta is a small organization with a big reach. We’re a collective of scientists and entrepreneurs working together to remove gigatons of CO2 from the atmosphere by accelerating the weathering rate of the mineral olivine. To safely and effectively advance CCC, Project Vesta is engaged in diverse scientific research with collaborators from both domestic and international universities and institutions. Investigating the drivers of olivine dissolution in coastal environments involves studying numerous oceanographic processes at multiple scales. We are also developing social licensing frameworks along with researching public perceptions of CCC. Taken together, our aim is to holistically advance the safe and effective deployment of olivine sand in coastal areas by working with local communities, governments, and scientists.
The responsibilities of this position include:
● Managing personnel and contractors working with the Project Vesta DR Science team
● Running, maintaining, and troubleshooting analytical lab equipment
● Inventorying and ordering supplies
● Assisting in field and laboratory studies
● Providing thoughtful and evidence-based insight to the project team about how to advance our mission in an ethically and scientifically robust manner
● Helping us select and finalize the purchase of the optimal equipment for our field station
● Assist with the coordination of research activities and actively contribute to research outputs in order to meet project milestones.

Project Vesta's our mission is to help reverse climate change by harnessing the power of the ocean and removing excess carbon from earth's atmosphere. We know that reducing carbon dioxide emissions alone will not be enough to solve the climate crisis: we need to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. When rain falls on volcanic rocks and washes them into the ocean, this weathering causes a reaction which removes CO2 from the atmosphere. Project Vesta is investigating the feasibility of Coastal Carbon Capture – an approach where weathering rates are accelerated using high energy coastal environments – for large scale carbon dioxide removal.
Project Vesta was born out of a climate change think-tank called Climitigation. This group investigated as many carbon capture solutions as possible, searching for one with massive potential but limited progress.
Climitigation found that coastal enhanced weathering was a process with enormous potential for cheap, permanent carbon capture at massive scale. Further, they found that the technology was stuck in the lab, despite real-life beach pilots being the clear next step. No one was bringing together the combination of multidisciplinary science, government support, funding, and sheer force of will that would help this technology ‘cross the chasm’ between theory and maturity. Project Vesta was founded to do exactly this.
We consider the entire life-cycle of the impacts of this nature-based solution. We aim to capture 20 times the CO2 we emit. We measure the ecological effects of our entire process from quarries to coastlines, and wherever possible seek to have a regenerative effect on the ecosystems and communities we touch.
